Dog food packaging guidelines are a starting point, not a prescription. They’re based on the average dog at an average activity level — your dog almost certainly isn’t that dog. Overfeeding is the most common nutritional mistake, contributing to the epidemic of canine obesity. Underfeeding, while less common, is a real risk in very active dogs, working dogs, and growing puppies. Getting this right matters enormously for your dog’s long-term health.
The Formula Behind Every Calorie Calculation
All canine calorie requirements start with the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) — the calories needed to support basic bodily functions at rest. This is calculated as:
RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75
This formula, published in the WSAVA Global Nutrition Guidelines and used by veterinary nutritionists worldwide, accounts for the non-linear relationship between body size and metabolic rate. A 30 kg dog does not have three times the metabolic rate of a 10 kg dog.

Why Packet Guidelines Often Lead to Overfeeding
Pet food manufacturers set feeding guidelines based on an intact (not neutered) adult dog at a moderate activity level. Most pet dogs in the UK and US are neutered and have significantly lower activity levels than the guidelines assume. A neutered, moderately sedentary dog may only require 70–80% of what the packet suggests.
Additionally, cup measurements are notoriously unreliable. Research by the University of Illinois found that when people used the same measuring cup, they overestimated portions by an average of 80%. Kitchen scales are significantly more accurate.
Reading Dog Food Labels: What Actually Matters
The most important number on a dog food label is the kcal/kg or kcal/cup figure — usually found in small print at the bottom of the guaranteed analysis section or in the feeding guidelines. This allows you to calculate exactly how much food provides your target calorie level, regardless of brand or food type.
Foods with high moisture content (wet food, raw) have dramatically lower caloric density per gram than dry kibble — typically 70–100 kcal per 100g for wet food versus 300–400 kcal per 100g for dry kibble. This doesn’t make them better or worse, but it does mean direct weight comparisons between food types are meaningless without calorie figures.
How Often to Feed
Most adult dogs do well on two meals per day — morning and evening. This maintains more stable blood glucose levels than once-daily feeding and significantly reduces bloat (GDV) risk in large, deep-chested breeds compared to one large meal. Puppies under 4 months require 3–4 meals daily; puppies 4–6 months typically do well on 3 meals; from 6 months, two meals is appropriate for most breeds.
Free feeding (leaving food available all day) is only appropriate for dogs with specific medical conditions or very low obesity risk. For the majority of dogs — especially food-motivated breeds like Labradors, Beagles, and Pugs — free feeding reliably leads to obesity.
Adjusting for Body Condition
No formula perfectly predicts individual calorie needs. Use the calculated amount as a starting point, then adjust based on body condition assessment every 2–4 weeks. If your dog is gaining weight on the calculated amount, reduce by 10%. If losing weight unintentionally, increase by 10%. The goal is maintaining a BCS of 4–5 on the 9-point scale — ribs easily palpable, visible waist, abdominal tuck present.
