📖 About Shih Tzus

Health, nutrition and care information specific to this breed

The Shih Tzu ("Lion Dog" in Mandarin) is one of the oldest toy breeds, developed in Tibet and refined in the Chinese imperial court. Their flowing double coat, warm temperament, and confident personality have made them a perennial favourite worldwide. Despite their glamorous appearance, they are sturdy and surprisingly playful.

Shih Tzus weigh 4–8 kg and live 10–16 years — one of the longer-lived toy breeds. They are brachycephalic (flat-faced), which creates specific health considerations, though their features are typically less extreme than Bulldogs or Pugs. Their long coat grows continuously and requires significant grooming maintenance or regular professional clipping.

Brachycephalic Concerns

Shih Tzus can experience breathing difficulties related to their flat face, particularly in heat or during vigorous exercise. Their prominent eyes are highly vulnerable to injury and chronic dryness (KCS). Corneal ulcers can develop from even minor trauma. Always carry water and avoid exercise in hot weather. Our Calorie Calculator uses activity-adjusted formulas — most Shih Tzus have low-moderate exercise needs.

Dental and Kidney Health

Like most toy breeds, Shih Tzus are prone to dental crowding and early periodontal disease. Daily brushing and annual dental cleans are important. Renal dysplasia — underdeveloped kidneys present from birth — has above-average prevalence in the breed. Signs (increased thirst, weight loss) may not appear until kidney function is significantly compromised.

Weight Monitoring

Their thick double coat can easily conceal weight gain. Regular weigh-ins and BCS assessment by feel (not by sight) are essential. Use our Ideal Weight Calculator to establish accurate targets.
