📖 About Siberian Huskys

Health, nutrition and care information specific to this breed

The Siberian Husky is a medium-sized working sled dog developed by the Chukchi people of Siberia for pulling sleds over vast distances in extreme cold. They are built for endurance, not speed — capable of covering 100+ miles per day at a moderate pace on relatively few calories. This metabolic efficiency surprises many first-time Husky owners.

Huskies weigh 16–27 kg and typically live 12–14 years. Their thick double coat is remarkably effective at insulation in both cold and warm climates — it should never be shaved. They are known for their striking eyes (often blue, heterochromia is common) and vocal nature (they rarely bark but "talk" and howl extensively).

Metabolic Efficiency — Calorie Needs Are Lower Than Expected

Siberian Huskies have unusually efficient metabolisms. A working sled Husky covering 100 miles per day metabolises energy differently from other breeds — they can downregulate their metabolism during sustained exercise in a way unique to the breed. As pets, this means they need significantly fewer calories than their size suggests. Many Huskies are overfed by owners using standard breed-size guidelines. Eye Conditions

Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) — causing gradual blindness — and hereditary cataracts are both present in the Husky gene pool. The Siberian Husky Club of America recommends annual CAER eye examinations for all breeding stock. Corneal dystrophy, causing opaque patches on the cornea, is also breed-associated.

The Escape Artist

Huskies have strong prey drive and wanderlust — they are exceptional escape artists who will run if given any opportunity. 6-foot fencing with a dig guard is the minimum requirement. A Husky off-lead in an unsecured area is a Husky at serious risk.

Common Health Conditions

Progressive retinal atrophy, hereditary cataracts, corneal dystrophy, hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, zinc-responsive dermatosis.

Feeding & Nutrition

RER × 1.3–1.5 for pet dogs — significantly less than their size implies. Avoid overfeeding. Two meals daily. Raw or fresh food diets popular for the breed. Zinc supplementation may be needed — some Huskies have impaired zinc absorption.

🏃

Exercise & Activity

Very high: 1.5–2 hours daily minimum, ideally more. Running, hiking, canicross (running with dog), bikejoring. Never run in heat — heat stroke risk is high. In summer, exercise only early morning or evening. Must be secured at all times.
