📖 About Yorkshire Terriers

Health, nutrition and care information specific to this breed

The Yorkshire Terrier packs a huge personality into a tiny body. Originally bred to catch rats in Yorkshire mills in the 19th century, the modern Yorkie is a glamorous companion dog with a bold, tenacious terrier temperament. They are one of the most popular toy breeds worldwide and adapt excellently to apartment living.

Yorkshire Terriers typically weigh 2–3.2 kg and live 13–16 years — one of the longest lifespans of any breed. Their long, silky, hypoallergenic coat requires significant grooming maintenance. Despite their small size, they are fearless and will challenge dogs many times their size.

Portosystemic Shunts (Liver Shunts)

Portosystemic shunts — abnormal blood vessel connections that allow blood to bypass the liver — have a significantly elevated prevalence in Yorkshire Terriers. Signs typically appear in puppies or young dogs: poor growth, vomiting after meals, disorientation, and seizures. Diagnosis requires specialist imaging. Surgical correction offers a good prognosis if caught early.

Tracheal Collapse

The trachea (windpipe) in Yorkshire Terriers is prone to progressive collapse, causing a characteristic honking cough, exercise intolerance, and respiratory distress. Never use a neck collar on a Yorkie — always use a harness to avoid tracheal pressure. Obesity worsens tracheal collapse significantly. Dental Disease

Yorkshire Terriers, like most toy breeds, are highly prone to dental disease. Their small mouths fit adult-sized teeth, leading to overcrowding, tartar accumulation, and early tooth loss. Daily tooth brushing and regular professional dental cleans are essential.

Feeding & Nutrition

RER × 1.4–1.6 for adults. Very small stomach — 2–3 small meals daily to prevent hypoglycaemia. Precise portioning critical given tiny size — even 200g overweight is significant for a 2.5kg dog. High-quality small-breed kibble.

🏃

Exercise & Activity

Moderate: 30–45 minutes daily in 2 sessions. Always use a harness, never a collar. Free play in safe indoor/outdoor spaces meets most of their exercise needs. Mental stimulation through training is important for this intelligent breed.
