What Is the Dog Salt Toxicity Calculator?

Assess the risk when your dog eats salt, salty foods, or drinks salt water — by amount and dog weight.

Salt toxicity (hypernatraemia) is a serious and underappreciated risk in dogs. Large amounts of salt from salty snacks, sea water, rock salt, or homemade play dough can cause seizures and brain damage. Use this calculator to assess the risk.

Every result is based on published veterinary research and breed-size-specific growth data — not generic averages. This tool is completely free, works instantly in your browser, and requires no account or sign-up.

How It Works

Excessive sodium intake causes hypernatraemia — abnormally high sodium levels in the blood. This draws water out of brain cells, causing them to shrink and potentially rupture small blood vessels. Paradoxically, correcting salt poisoning too quickly with water can cause brain cells to swell (cerebral oedema), which is why fluid therapy must be managed by a vet.

The toxic oral dose of sodium for dogs is approximately 4g/kg (4,000mg/kg) of body weight, with significant toxicity beginning around 1.5–2g/kg. Sources: ASPCA Animal Poison Control, Merck Veterinary Manual.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can dogs drink sea water?+
No — sea water contains approximately 1,000mg of sodium per 100ml. Dogs that drink sea water at the beach can develop salt toxicity rapidly, especially small dogs. Always bring fresh water to the beach and monitor your dog closely.
Why is homemade play dough so dangerous for dogs?+
Homemade play dough is made with large quantities of salt — typically 1 cup of salt per batch. A small dog eating a ball of play dough can ingest a potentially fatal sodium dose. It is one of the most common causes of severe salt toxicity seen in veterinary emergency clinics.
Should I give my dog water if they ate something salty?+
Allow small amounts of fresh water freely, but do NOT force large volumes of water rapidly. In cases of significant salt ingestion, sodium levels must be corrected slowly under veterinary supervision. Rapid water intake can cause dangerous cerebral oedema (brain swelling).
