How It Works

Pitbull coat colour involves the standard canine loci. The A locus controls sable/fawn vs. brindle pattern interaction. The K locus (kbr allele) determines brindle expression. The B locus determines black vs. chocolate/red. The D locus determines dilution — blue (dilute black) and champagne (dilute red) are created by the dd genotype. The E locus controls yellow/red expression. The M locus controls merle — historically absent in American Pitbull Terriers.

What is a blue Pitbull?+
A blue Pitbull is a dog with the dilution gene (dd at the D locus), which dilutes black pigment to a grey-blue colour. Blue Pitbulls are legitimate colour variants — recognised by the UKC and ADBA — though they are sometimes associated with a higher incidence of Colour Dilution Alopecia (a skin condition causing hair loss and skin infections).
Are merle Pitbulls purebred?+
Merle is not a historically documented colour in purebred American Pitbull Terriers or American Staffordshire Terriers. Its presence in a dog claiming to be a purebred Pitbull strongly suggests mixed breeding — most likely with a merle-carrying breed. The UKC and ADBA do not recognise merle as a legitimate Pitbull colour. Merle Pitbulls are often sold at significant premiums based on colour rarity.
What is a tri-colour Pitbull?+
Tri-colour (or tricolour) Pitbulls have three colours: a base colour (black, blue, or chocolate), tan points (similar to Rottweiler or Doberman markings), and white. The tan points are caused by the at allele at the A locus. While not a traditional Pitbull colour, tri-colour does occur in some recognised lines without crossbreeding and is accepted by some registries.
