What Is the Dog Maintenance Fluid Calculator?

Calculate daily maintenance fluid requirements for hospitalised dogs based on body weight.

Maintenance fluids replace normal daily losses in dogs not eating or drinking. Distinct from dehydration deficit replacement or ongoing loss replacement.

Every result is based on published veterinary research and breed-size-specific growth data — not generic averages. This tool is completely free, works instantly in your browser, and requires no account or sign-up.

How It Works

Maintenance fluid rate is the volume of fluid required to replace normal ongoing losses — insensible losses (respiratory and skin) and sensible losses (urine, faeces) — in a hospitalised dog not eating or drinking normally. The standard formula for dogs is 60 ml/kg/day (or approximately 2.5 ml/kg/hr) using the linear formula. The allometric formula (132 × BW^0.75) is preferred for very small (<3kg) or very large (>50kg) dogs where the linear formula over- or underestimates requirements. Maintenance fluids should be individualised — concurrent losses (vomiting, diarrhoea, polyuria, wound exudate) must be added separately as ongoing loss replacement.

Normal maintenance fluid requirement: 40–60 ml/kg/day in dogs. Puppies and febrile patients require higher rates.

FAQ

What is the maintenance fluid rate for dogs?+
Allometric formula: 132 x (BW kg)^0.75 ml/day. Simplified: 60ml/kg/day (2.5ml/kg/hr). For a 20kg dog: ~1,360ml/day allometric vs 1,200ml/day simplified. Allometric is more accurate for very small dogs.
