How It Works

Anaesthetic breathing circuit bag size is determined by the patient's tidal volume and must be large enough to hold at least 6 tidal volumes to prevent rebreathing of CO₂ and to allow manual ventilation. The minimum bag size formula is: Bag Volume = 6 × Tidal Volume, where Tidal Volume = 10–15 ml/kg. For a 20kg dog: TV = 200–300ml, minimum bag = 1,200–1,800ml. In practice, the nearest standard bag size above the minimum is selected. Paediatric bags (0.5L, 1L) are used for small dogs and cats under 7kg; standard bags (2L, 3L) for most dogs; large bags (3L, 5L) for giant breeds. The fresh gas flow rate through the circuit should equal at least 100–200 ml/kg/min during induction, reducible to 30–50 ml/kg/min during maintenance.

How do I choose the right anaesthetic bag for a dog?+
Select the bag closest to 5-6x estimated tidal volume (~60-70ml/kg). For a 10kg dog: VT ~120ml, bag ~700ml = use 1L. For a 30kg dog: VT ~360ml, bag ~2,160ml = use 2L or 3L. Always use 0.5L for dogs under 3kg.
