How It Works

Minute ventilation is the total volume of gas moved in and out of the lungs per minute — calculated as tidal volume multiplied by respiratory rate. Normal minute ventilation in dogs is 170–350 ml/kg/min. During mechanical ventilation or manual IPPV (intermittent positive pressure ventilation), the goal is to maintain normocapnia (PaCO₂ 35–45 mmHg). Hypoventilation (high PaCO₂) causes respiratory acidosis and CNS depression. Hyperventilation (low PaCO₂) causes respiratory alkalosis and cerebral vasoconstriction. Tidal volume for mechanical ventilation in dogs: 10–15 ml/kg at 8–20 breaths/minute. Inspiratory:Expiratory ratio should be 1:2 to 1:3 to allow adequate exhalation.
