How It Works

Potassium supplementation is guided by the Haskins scale — the potassium concentration added to IV fluids depends on the severity of hypokalaemia. Below 2.0 mEq/L: 80 mEq/L. 2.0-2.5: 60 mEq/L. 2.5-3.0: 40 mEq/L. 3.0-3.5: 28 mEq/L. Above 3.5: 20 mEq/L maintenance. The maximum safe IV potassium delivery rate is 0.5 mEq/kg/hr — exceeding this risks fatal ventricular arrhythmias. Maximum concentration in fluids should not exceed 60 mEq/L without central venous administration.
