📖 About Bulldogs

Health, nutrition and care information specific to this breed

The English Bulldog (or simply Bulldog) is one of Britain's most iconic breeds — instantly recognisable by their wrinkled face, stocky build, and rolling gait. Originally bred for bull-baiting, modern Bulldogs bear little resemblance in temperament to their ancestors and are known for being gentle, calm, and deeply affectionate with families.

Bulldogs weigh 18–25 kg and stand low to the ground. Their lifespan is unfortunately short — typically 8–10 years — largely due to the extensive health issues associated with their extreme conformation. They require significant veterinary care throughout their lives.

The Brachycephalic Challenge

Like French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs suffer severely from Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome. Many require corrective surgery (widening nostrils, shortening soft palate) to breathe adequately. Heat stroke is a constant risk and can be fatal within minutes. Air-conditioned environments are essential in warm climates.

Skin Fold Care and Weight

Bulldogs have deep facial folds, a corkscrew tail, and body folds that trap moisture and bacteria. Daily cleaning of all folds is essential. Obesity worsens these folds, increases skin infection risk, and puts further strain on already stressed joints and airways. Target BCS 4–5 strictly using our Calorie Calculator.

Reproduction and Whelping

English Bulldogs cannot breed or give birth naturally in most cases. Their wide heads prevent vaginal birth and their short legs make natural mating difficult. Almost all Bulldog litters are born by Caesarean section, planned in advance. Use our Gestation Calculator to time C-section booking accurately.

Feeding & Nutrition

RER × 1.2–1.3 for sedentary adults. Very calorie-efficient breed. Shallow wide bowl recommended. Two small meals. Avoid any exercise for 1–2 hours after eating. No table scraps — obesity is a primary killer in this breed.

🏃

Exercise & Activity

Very low tolerance — 20 minutes maximum in cool conditions. No exercise in temperatures above 20°C. Short, slow, flat walks only. Carry water at all times. Watch gum colour — pale or blue gums mean stop immediately and cool the dog.
