Dachshund Calculators

Dachshunds are prone to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) — keeping them lean is critical to spinal health. Their long spines are at significant risk from excess body weight.

📖 About Dachshunds

Health, nutrition and care information specific to this breed

The Dachshund (Dackel or Teckel) is one of the most distinctive-looking breeds in the world, with their long spine, deep chest, and short legs developed for hunting badgers underground in Germany. They come in standard (7–15 kg) and miniature (3.5–5 kg) sizes, with three coat varieties: smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired.

Dachshunds are bold, curious, and surprisingly athletic for their shape. They have strong hunting instincts and a loud bark disproportionate to their size. Life expectancy is 12–16 years, and they frequently live well into their teens.

Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) — The Defining Health Challenge

IVDD is the most significant health concern in Dachshunds. Their long spine and shortened legs create biomechanical stress on the intervertebral discs. An estimated 19–24% of Dachshunds will experience a disc herniation severe enough to cause pain, weakness, or paralysis during their lifetime. Keeping a Dachshund lean is the single most impactful owner-controlled intervention for spinal health — each kilogram of excess weight dramatically increases disc pressure. Use our Dachshund Calorie Calculator to maintain optimal weight.

Preventing IVDD

Use ramps instead of stairs and furniture jumps. Avoid activities that require prolonged spinal extension (repetitive ball chasing). Harnesses instead of collars distribute pressure more safely. Early signs of disc problems: reluctance to jump, back arching, hind limb dragging. These are always an emergency — time to treatment is critical for neurological recovery.

Coat Colour and Neurological Risk

Dachshunds with double dapple colouring (two copies of the merle gene) have very high rates of deafness, blindness, and micropthalmia (underdeveloped eyes). Ethical breeders never produce double dapple litters. Single dapple Dachshunds are healthy but should not be bred to another dapple.

Common Health Conditions

IVDD (intervertebral disc disease, 19-24% prevalence), obesity (major risk factor for IVDD), patellar luxation, progressive retinal atrophy, double dapple deafness/blindness, epilepsy.

Feeding & Nutrition

Strict calorie control — even 10% overweight doubles IVDD risk. RER × 1.3–1.4 for adults. Two small measured meals daily. No table scraps. Spinal health depends directly on weight management — this cannot be overstated.

🏃

Exercise & Activity

Moderate: 30–45 minutes daily on flat ground. Avoid jumping, climbing stairs, and rough play. Ramps for all furniture access. Swimming is excellent — no spinal compression. Stop any activity if the dog shows reluctance to move or back arching.
