How It Works
The correct crate size is calculated from actual measurements, not just weight or breed size categories. The minimum height should be 10% taller than the dog's shoulder height (enough to stand without stooping). The minimum length should be 10% longer than the dog from nose to base of tail (enough to lie fully stretched). Width is estimated from weight as a proxy for body width.
For crate training, the ideal size is the minimum — enough for the dog to stand, turn, and lie stretched, but not so much extra space that they can toilet in one corner and sleep in another. A divider partition allows you to start small with a puppy and increase space as they grow.
