How It Works

Sodium content is expressed as a percentage on the guaranteed analysis or as mg per 100g. Converting to dry matter basis and then to daily mg intake allows accurate assessment of whether a dog's sodium consumption meets veterinary guidelines. For dogs with heart disease, the ACVIM recommends sodium restriction in later stages (B2 and C): mild restriction at 80–100mg/100kcal, moderate restriction at 50mg/100kcal.

How much sodium should a dog with heart disease have?+
According to ACVIM 2018 guidelines: Stage B1 (asymptomatic, no cardiac changes) — moderate sodium intake is fine, avoid very high sodium foods. Stage B2 and C (cardiac remodelling or clinical signs present) — mild to moderate restriction at 50–80mg sodium per 100 kcal is recommended. Stage D (refractory) — more aggressive restriction may be needed. Always follow your cardiologist's specific recommendations.
Is sodium restriction necessary for all dogs with heart murmurs?+
No — sodium restriction is not recommended for dogs with incidental murmurs (Stage B1) with no cardiac changes. Over-restriction of sodium in early disease can actually activate harmful hormonal systems (the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system). Restriction is recommended when cardiac remodelling (enlarged heart) is confirmed on echocardiography.
