Dog Pavement Temperature Calculator
Check whether the pavement is too hot for your dog's paws based on air temperature — using the proven 5-second paw rule.
What Is the Dog Pavement Temperature Calculator?
Check whether the pavement is too hot for your dog's paws based on air temperature — using the proven 5-second paw rule.
Pavement temperature can reach 60–70°C on a hot day when air temperature is only 30°C. Dog paws can suffer burns in as little as 60 seconds of contact with hot surfaces. This calculator estimates pavement temperature from air temperature and advises whether it is safe to walk — and how long before the pavement cools to a safe level.
Every result is based on published veterinary research and breed-size-specific growth data — not generic averages. This tool is completely free, works instantly in your browser, and requires no account or sign-up.

How It Works
Pavement absorbs and retains solar radiation significantly more than air. Research by the American Veterinary Medical Association and independent studies have shown that pavement temperature typically exceeds air temperature by 25–35°C on sunny days. Dark asphalt reaches the highest temperatures. The relationship is approximately: pavement temp = air temp × 2 − 5°C (at peak sun). The safe threshold for dog paws is approximately 40°C surface temperature — tissue damage occurs at 47°C within 60 seconds.
