How It Works

Normal resting respiratory rate in adult dogs is 15–30 breaths per minute. A resting respiratory rate above 30 breaths/minute (particularly above 35) in a dog with known heart disease may indicate the early development of congestive heart failure and pulmonary oedema — and warrants immediate veterinary contact. Puppies breathe faster than adults. Respiratory rate should always be measured when the dog is truly at rest and asleep if possible — excitement, heat, and panting will all artificially elevate the rate.

How do I count my dog's respiratory rate at home?+
