How It Works
The most commonly used puppy dewormers contain fenbendazole, pyrantel pamoate, or praziquantel. Dosing is weight-based. Fenbendazole (Panacur) is dosed at 50mg/kg daily for 3 days, effective against roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and some tapeworms. Pyrantel pamoate is dosed at 5mg/kg (base), effective against roundworms and hookworms. Praziquantel (for tapeworms) is dosed at 5–10mg/kg as a single dose.
The recommended deworming schedule for puppies: 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 weeks, 8 weeks, then monthly until 6 months, then every 3 months as adults.
