How It Works

Labrador color is controlled by two loci: the B locus (TYRP1 gene) determines black vs chocolate/brown. BB or Bb = black pigment, bb = chocolate/brown pigment. The E locus (MC1R gene) determines whether pigment is expressed — EE or Ee = normal expression, ee = yellow (overrides B locus entirely). A yellow Lab can carry black (Ebb) or chocolate (eebb) genes and pass them to offspring despite appearing yellow.

All three Labrador colors follow standard Mendelian inheritance with no linked health effects from coat color alone. The so-called "Dudley" Labrador (pink nose, pale eyes in a yellow dog) results from being homozygous recessive at both loci (bbee).

Can two black Labs have a yellow puppy?+
Yes — if both black parents carry the recessive e allele (both are BbEe or BBEe), there is a 25% chance of yellow puppies. Yellow is recessive and can hide undetected in black and chocolate dogs for generations. This is why two seemingly all-black breeding lines can suddenly produce yellow puppies.
Can two yellow Labs have a black or chocolate puppy?+
No — two yellow Labs (both ee at the E locus) can never produce a black or chocolate puppy. Since ee overrides the B locus entirely, all puppies from two yellow parents will also be yellow (or Dudley if both parents carry bb). The e allele is like a switch that turns off B locus expression.
What is a Dudley Labrador?+
A Dudley Lab is a yellow Labrador that is also homozygous chocolate at the B locus (genotype bbee). They appear yellow but have a pink or flesh-coloured nose, light-coloured lips and eye rims, and pale yellow-green eyes — rather than the black nose of a standard yellow Lab. Dudleys are not eligible for show but are otherwise healthy and normal in temperament.
