Every year, animal poison helplines receive hundreds of thousands of calls. The vast majority involve common household items — not exotic poisons. Understanding which substances pose the greatest risk, and knowing what to do in the first critical minutes, can save your dog’s life.

1. Chocolate — The Most Common Emergency Call

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which dogs metabolise far more slowly than humans. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are most dangerous — dark chocolate contains approximately 130–450 mg of theobromine per ounce, compared to 44–60 mg in milk chocolate and just 0.25 mg in white chocolate.

Signs of chocolate toxicity include vomiting, diarrhoea, increased urination, muscle tremors, and in severe cases, seizures and cardiac arrhythmias. 2. Xylitol — Found in More Products Than You Think

Xylitol is an artificial sweetener found in sugar-free gum, peanut butter (always check the label), baked goods, dental care products, and some vitamins. It causes a rapid and severe drop in blood glucose in dogs and can cause liver failure at higher doses.

The toxic dose is very low — approximately 0.1 mg/kg to cause hypoglycaemia and 0.5 mg/kg or higher for potential liver damage. A single piece of xylitol-containing gum can be dangerous for a small dog. Time to treatment is critical — if ingested within 30 minutes, your vet may induce vomiting to prevent absorption.

3. Grapes and Raisins — Unexpectedly Dangerous

The toxic component in grapes and raisins has never been definitively identified, but the outcome is well-documented: acute kidney failure. Even small amounts can be severely toxic in some dogs, while others appear to be unaffected by larger quantities. There is no safe minimum dose — treat any grape or raisin ingestion as an emergency.

Signs typically appear 24–48 hours after ingestion: vomiting, lethargy, decreased urination, and flank pain. By the time signs appear, significant kidney damage may have already occurred. Immediate veterinary assessment is essential.

4. Ibuprofen and Paracetamol (NSAIDs and Acetaminophen)

These common human medications are among the most frequently ingested toxins by dogs. Ibuprofen causes gastrointestinal ulceration and kidney failure — a single 400mg tablet can cause problems in a 10 kg dog. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) damages red blood cells and causes liver failure, though dogs are somewhat less sensitive to it than cats.

Never give human pain medications to dogs without explicit veterinary guidance. Dog-safe NSAIDs (carprofen, meloxicam) are prescribed at carefully calculated weight-based doses — they are not interchangeable with human formulations.

5. Onions, Garlic, Leeks, and Chives

All members of the Allium family are toxic to dogs, causing oxidative damage to red blood cells and resulting in haemolytic anaemia. Garlic is approximately 5 times more potent than onions. The toxic dose for onions is approximately 15–30g per kg body weight — but regular small exposures can have a cumulative effect.

Cooked forms are just as toxic as raw. Signs may not appear for several days after ingestion and include pale gums, weakness, reduced appetite, and dark-coloured urine.

6. Macadamia Nuts

The mechanism of macadamia nut toxicity in dogs is unknown, but the effects are well-documented. Ingestion causes weakness (particularly in the hind limbs), tremors, hyperthermia, and vomiting. Symptoms typically appear within 12 hours and resolve within 24–48 hours in most cases, but veterinary assessment is still recommended.

7. Alcohol

Dogs are far more sensitive to alcohol than humans. Even small amounts of ethanol can cause significant toxicity — vomiting, disorientation, respiratory depression, and in severe cases, coma and death. The danger extends beyond alcoholic drinks: bread dough containing live yeast ferments in the stomach, producing alcohol. Raw dough also expands in the warm, moist environment of the stomach, causing mechanical obstruction.

8. Rat Poison (Rodenticides)

Anticoagulant rodenticides (warfarin, brodifacoum, bromadiolone) prevent blood clotting by blocking Vitamin K1. Signs may not appear for 3–5 days after ingestion. By the time bleeding signs are visible (pale gums, blood in urine, respiratory distress), the dog may be critically ill. Treatment (Vitamin K1 therapy) is effective but must continue for weeks.

9. Batteries

Batteries cause chemical burns when chewed or swallowed — the alkaline material is highly caustic. Disc/button batteries are particularly dangerous as they can lodge in the oesophagus and cause severe burns within 2 hours. Any battery ingestion is an emergency.

10. Antifreeze (Ethylene Glycol)

Antifreeze has a sweet taste that attracts dogs and causes a rapid progression from apparent intoxication to fatal kidney failure within 24–72 hours. The toxic dose is just 4.4 ml/kg. Time to treatment is critical — within the first few hours, treatment (inducing vomiting, administering antidote) can be lifesaving. After 24–48 hours, prognosis is poor.

What to Do in an Emergency

If you suspect your dog has ingested any toxic substance:

  1. Stay calm and note the substance, estimated amount, and time of ingestion
