How Dog Toxicity Calculations Work

Toxic dose thresholds are expressed as milligrams of the toxic substance per kilogram of the dog's bodyweight (mg/kg). For chocolate, the toxic compound is theobromine — dark chocolate contains far more per gram than milk chocolate, which is why the type of chocolate matters enormously. For ibuprofen, even 5mg/kg can cause gastric ulcers; 50mg/kg causes kidney failure.

These calculators take your dog's weight and the amount consumed, calculate the mg/kg dose received, and compare it against known toxic thresholds to return a risk level. A low risk result doesn't mean you do nothing — it means the situation is less urgent. When in doubt, always call your vet or an animal poison helpline immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

My dog ate chocolate — how much is dangerous?

It depends on the type of chocolate and your dog's weight. Dark chocolate is far more dangerous than milk chocolate. Use the Chocolate Toxicity Calculator for an immediate answer.

Are grapes always toxic to dogs?

Yes — there's no established safe dose. Even a single grape has caused kidney failure in some dogs. Treat any grape ingestion as an emergency.

Can dogs eat onions in small amounts?

No safe amount has been established. Onion toxicity is cumulative — regular small exposures can cause anaemia over time.

What is the animal poison helpline number?

In the UK: Animal Poison Line — 01202 509000. In the US: ASPCA Animal Poison Control — (888) 426-4435. Both charge a consultation fee.
